Nervous During Job Interviews? Here’s How to Overcome the Nerves!

No matter how much you tell yourself, interviewing can be rough on your nerves. You may not know what to say, you may feel your palms get clammy, and you may want to be anywhere but there. But, interviewing is still an essential part of the job search so it’s in your best interest to overcome your nerves and put your best foot forward. If you want to know how, here are some ideas.

Start with homework.

The single worst thing you can ask an interview is, “What does your company do?” You need to prepare and know as much as you can about the job and the company. Read their website and look at their social profiles to get you started. You can also look up news that might mention the company name.

Make the Drive.

Another grave mistake by job seekers is arriving late to the interview. This sets the tone for the employer and they wonder if you’re late to the interview, will you be late to work. Calm your nerves by doing a test drive to the company site. Try it during rush hour traffic to determine if the commute will also work for you.

Snack and exercise.

You may feel too nervous to eat before your interview. Here’s what you can do instead. Start your day with a workout. Go for a walk, ride your bike, go to the gym; whatever works best for you. Then, have a strategic snack. Avoid too much caffeine. You don’t want to make yourself even more jittery. Then eat a snack to get yourself ready. Try something healthy like nuts or fruit like a banana.

Pay attention to your breathing.

Before you go into the building, take a moment or two in your car to meditate. This doesn’t have to be an in-depth Buddhist monk style practice, just a few moments to calm yourself and focus on your breathing. If negative thoughts creep in, push them away and concentrate on your breath. After a few moments, go in and rock that interview.
