5 Steps to Help Retain Employees That Are at Risk to Leave

As much as we would like to believe our workplaces are amazing places for our employees, there are always occasions that cause staff to consider leaving. But if you feel your team is at a high risk, there may be some steps you can take to help retain your current employees. Many companies do exit interviews to better understand why someone quit. Rather than facing the problem after it’s too late, consider conducting stay interviews to help determine how you can make the employee experience better. Here are some ideas.

Ask what they like about their job

If an employee is dissatisfied, they may find it difficult to think about what it is they like. In fact, they may never have been asked that question before. But if you can drill down to the things they like about what they do, you may have a chance to rearrange their work to make that more of a focus on their job.

Ask them about their best day

Turning the conversation toward more positive subjects can help both of you get perspective. They may be frustrated, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t experienced good days. If they begin to tell you about their best day on the job or the last day they considered good, this can help you make necessary changes to ensure more of these days happen.

Ask if they feel stuck in a rut

Maybe they’ve simply hit a wall with their current job duties. Maybe they can no longer see themselves on this particular career path. That doesn’t mean they have to leave the organization to find satisfaction again, but they may not realize that. If you can determine how they feel stuck, you may be able to un-stick them.

Ask if they feel appreciated

Sometimes job dissatisfaction is really based on a feeling of not being valued. And even if you think you have the right recognition programs in place, if someone feels invisible or underappreciated, they will be unhappy in their role. Can you make changes to help them see how their contribution is essential to your company’s success?

Ask if they feel trusted

Lastly, your frustrated employee might feel like they are not trusted with important decisions. This could point to issues with management strategies. For instance, do they complete a project and then feel as though their work wasn’t good enough. Do they experience micromanagement where someone is always over their shoulder? This can cause great distress in the workplace.
