How To Keep Your Employees Motivated Through the Summer Months

The summer is lazy and hot and this year it seems to have snuck up on most of the country after a long, cold winter. So that means the cabin fever was heavy and now that summer’s actually here, many people are ready to abandon everything and enjoy the warm sun. So how do you keep your staff motivated, especially in a heavy labor environment like a shipyard? With all the potential distractions, what can you do to reign everyone back in. Here are a few ways you can recharge your staff and keep them engaged.

Enact a summer schedule.

While it may not be possible for everyone depending on the roles, but you may want to consider a summer schedule. There may be some roof for flexibility in your shipyard without sacrificing productivity. Maybe you can have four 10-hour days and take Fridays off or stagger days throughout the week. Maybe you can create a personal time bank that will allow your staff to take additional time off in the summer.

Throw a summer party.

Of course, you should never underestimate a good, old-fashioned summer party. Parties are a great way to recognize your team and celebrate their accomplishments away from the worksite. Invite your staff and their families for a beach party, a picnic, or a weekend retreat. This is great team building and also encourages your staff to get to know one another outside of the work environment.

Remember the art of the surprise.

There should be regular ways to recognize your employees throughout the year, especially the summer, but never forget how a surprise can motivate your team. Randomly recognize employees on the job. Surprise them with pizza on a random Friday. Do whatever sounds like it will be a hit with your team and provide motivation.

Volunteer in your community.

More and more young workers are looking to work with companies that have a community minded mission. By creating a program with your team to volunteer in the community or give to local charities, you can motivate your staff to participate and feel good about their contribution on the job and beyond.
