How To Set The Tone With Workplace Safety

We write often about safety. Here at Hutco, safety is a number one priority for us, our contingent workforce, and our client companies. Even with an established culture of safety, it’s important that management sets the overall tone for its importance across the board. Your marine company will have unique considerations when it comes to safety, so here are some ways you can make sure that your program is up to date and your employees value the safe environment.

Put safety first.

Safety needs to be a top priority for your management team. Without it, the profits and performance will suffer. Leading by example is one of the best ways to establish a culture that values safety at all times. There should be no exceptions to safety rules even for upper management. If your team sees you putting safety first, they will follow suit.

Invest in training.

Yes, you offer a safety orientation for each new team member, but is that enough? It shouldn’t be. Investing in regular safety training programs starting with onboarding and following each team member throughout their career is imperative. Your handbook and signs aren’t enough. A safety department and dedicated manager is well worth the investment.

Enforce the safety rules.

What does happen in your company if a safety rule is ignored? What happens if that oversight doesn’t result in an accident? Are the team members who broke the rule held accountable? The truth is, many organizations only enforce safety rules after an accident occurs. Instead, you need to be consistent and require everyone follow protocol at all times.

Reward compliance.

Adhering to the safety rules is part of the job, but it can also be something that is recognized by management. Even though you expect your team to follow these regulations while on the job, there is nothing wrong with acknowledging their participation. In fact, a culture of gratitude can go a long way to reinforcing the requirements. So, while training and reprimanding are both important, so is recognition for a job well done.
