Don’t Leave Your Employee Search Up To Luck

There is both an art and a science to hiring. You need to match skills to duties, but there is so much more than that. And leaving your employee search up to luck isn’t one of the best methods to finding the right employees for your shipyard. What can you do to improve your hiring process and bring more qualified candidates to the table?

  • Put your best foot forward. While your candidate needs to bring the right skills to the job, you also have to be a good environment for them to want to take your position. Your job posting shouldn’t be a laundry list of what you need but also include what you offer. You can attract the right employees by showcasing what makes you unique in the industry. Be sure to impress them in the interview. Do your homework by reading their resume and being prepared before the meeting. Be on time and don’t allow yourself to be distracted.
  • Don’t make snap decisions. Even if you’re convinced the employee is the right fit for the job, don’t give into the temptation to hire them on the spot. Hiring is an investment, so complete the process for everyone. Hiring someone on the spot can lead to a bad hiring decision without enough due diligence. Instead, just everyone on your short list using the same criteria and asking for input from others on your management team. Then you can make an offer to your top candidate.
  • You’ll get what you pay for. Lowering pay sounds like it can save you company money, but it doesn’t always work out that way. As an investment, what you get out of your employees is related to what you’ve put into them. Qualified candidates may not accept your position because you’re not competitive with your rates. Make sure you’re researching the pay rate and consider how their salary will affect their work/life balance. You don’t want to miss out on a top candidate just because you tried to save a dollar or two.
