Four Ways to Motivate your Shipyard Employees

Managers across all industries know that motivating employees is one of the most important aspects of running an effective department. Your shipyard is no different. You need to ensure that your workers are engaged, satisfied, and motivated. What are some of the best ways to do this within your marine environment? Here are four ideas that can get you started right now.

Celebrate success.

Never take the position that it’s just their job so your employees should do the work they’re tasked to complete with no reward. This can lead to resentment on the part of your team when they feel as though their contribution is not appreciated. Instead, take time out to celebrate successes in your shipyard.

Ask for input.

Trusting your employees with helping to develop new and creative ideas is also a great way to encourage participation. The motivation that your team feels when they see one of their ideas being implemented is astounding. Allow for your staff to contribute ideas and then take action.

Respond to feedback.

When your team feels like their voice isn’t being heard, it can impact their overall performance. Really listen to your staff when they come to you with a question or a concern. Do your best to address everything brought to the table. This can be valuable insight for you as a manager.

Coffee breaks.

When a team feels like their overworked, mistakes can happen. And this can, of course, affect overall productivity and output. Don’t allow your employees to feel this burnout. Provide them with plenty of coffee breaks. And the breaks don’t have to be reserved for coffee alone. Come up with creative ideas to step away from the work for a few moments each day.

Make it fun.

Finally, while the work you do in your shipyard is extremely serious and needs to be handled cautiously, that doesn’t mean your team can’t have fun. Some companies gamify the work they do by allowing staff members to cash in accomplishments for rewards. Or, take some time out and enjoy something fun during the day to reinvigorate your team.
