3 Keys for a Cohesive Work Environment?

No matter what industry you’re in the ultimate driver of your business, production, and services is people. In your shipyard, the people who matter most are your employees. So creating a cohesive work environment where your talented employees can work well together will be imperative to provide the best final product to your customers at the end of the day. So what are the keys to ensuring that everyone on your team is happy, engaged, and excited to work together to avoid unnecessary drama or conflict? Here are the 3 keys to creating a cohesive work environment.

1. Likability

Ultimately, it comes down to every person on your team. And to enhance your overall work environment, each member of the team needs to have an inerrant likability that fits in with the rest of the staff. There are a lot of variables that will affect this, such as the specific type of work you do and the personality traits of the people you already work with. But if your entire team isn’t generally likable, new employees will not find a welcoming workplace and quickly feel left out and disappointed. Make sure that you are developing a workplace culture that is, at its core, likable.

2. Common sense

Next, and especially within a fabrication or assembly environment, you need to instill the value that common sense is essential. Common sense is important when it comes to working with dangerous materials or tools, but also overall interpersonal interactions. Personal self-awareness should be highly valued in your workplace. It starts with hiring individuals who possess common sense, but it continues with the reinforcement that they need to be aware of their space, the people around them, and how their decisions affect others.

3. Courtesy

Hot on the heels of common sense is general courtesy. For instance, to have a cohesive work environment, individuals need to behave appropriately around coworkers. There shouldn’t be excessive gossiping, work should be completed on time so no one else is held up with their job, and disruptive behaviors should not be tolerated. Part of an employee’s job is not to make their coworker’s jobs harder, so this should be part of your company value system. Hiring people with a courteous nature or for whom this is already an important value will go a long way to creating a cohesive environment.
