5 Things To Avoid That Drive Away Talent

Are you concerned about losing your best marine industry employees? It isn’t always true that the problem lies with the workers. There may be some management ownership if you find that you’re top talent is leaving your shipyard too often. What can you do to avoid high turnover? Here are 5 things you can avoid to keep from driving top talent away.

1. Not controlling angry outbursts.

You may think you’re just letting off steam, but if you make regular emotional outbursts on the job, you may be running your best employees out. No one wants to work for a boss that they view as emotionally unstable or, worse, abusive. Even if you don’t think you’ve crossed a line yet, it’s time to reconsider how you react to certain situations before you do.

2. Not providing positive reinforcement.

Another reason good employees leave jobs is not feeling appreciated. Do you thank your employees when they do a good job? Do you recognize their performance in other ways through bonuses, recognition, or added benefits? Some managers don’t believe incentives should be part of a job, but if they don’t get them from you they will get them from your competition.

3. Not considering all the options.

Some talented employees get frustrated when their ideas get shot down by management. These are your star workers, and their solutions may be the best way to overcome a challenge or problem. If you’re insistent that your way is the only way to accomplish something, they will notice.

4. Not caring about personal needs.

Work/life balance is important across all industries today. So when your employee tells you about a personal challenge, they are hoping that you can help them out. If they need time off to care for a sick loved one. Or if they need to come in late one day due to an appointment, be willing to work with them. Don’t worry too much about people taking advantage of the system. If they do, that will be apparent in and of itself.

5. Not listening to your employees.

Finally, your top employees want to feel heard. If they talk to you about a challenge or a problem their having, don’t sweep it under the rug. Don’t just listen to them long enough to compose a response. Really listen to what they have to say, take it into consideration, and make positive changes based on their valuable feedback.
