Entry level positions.
If you’ve never worked in a shipyard before but think that you want to pursue a long-term marine career, starting with an entry-level position may be your best option. There are a variety of positions within the shipbuilding industry that don’t require previous experience, but more that do. So getting in with a marine employer at the ground level can help you build the skills you need for a future career.
Welding and soldering.
With some classes and training, you can enter the shipbuilding industry as a welder. Shipyards are always looking for people with welding or soldering experience since this is a key aspect of the ship assembly process, both small and large. You can start by taking some classes at your local technical school and work toward becoming certified. The most commonly used methods are arc welding, gas welding, and resistance welding.
Advanced positions.
If you’ve worked your way up from an entry level shipyard position, what other possible options are there for advancement. It turns out, there are plenty of advanced roles that require previous shipyard experience including marine surveyors, supervisors, engineers, and even designers. Many may require previous experience or advanced degrees, but you may also be able to transition from another industry to shipbuilding into these opportunities.
Quality control.
If you’re less inclined to work in a job such as welding, another avenue to consider is quality control. There will also always be the need for individuals who can inspect and approve of the work being done throughout the shipbuilding process. This job may require previous shipyard experience as well as knowledge of the inspection process and the ability to supervise multiple employees.
