Here’s Why First Impressions Are a Critical During Your Interview

Your first impression is all you have when it comes to interviewing with a new marine employer and getting a job offer. You don’t often get a second chance, so it’s critical that you put your best foot forward. Did you know that every step you take once you enter the workplace will be reviewed by the hiring managers? This includes how you interact with other office staff, how you dress, and whether or not you’re prepared for the interview. Here are some of the things you can do and why you need to make a great impression.

What you’re wearing.

Casual is often the default when it comes to working in a shipyard environment, but that doesn’t mean you want to go super casual in your first meeting. Dress professionally and stand out among your competition. You may not need to wear a suit, but dress slacks and a buttoned shirt will get the message across. Make sure you’re clothes are wrinkle free and in good repair as well.

Have a positive attitude.

Negativity is the biggest killer of a good interview. As soon as you turn the conversation in a negative direction, you’ve lost the interviewer. No matter what your previous experience, maintain a positive attitude as you discuss your background, your former employers, and what it is you want to do in the future with your marine career.

Choose your words carefully.

When you’re describing your skills or your previous experience, don’t rely too much on buzz words. You will need to demonstrate that you understand the language of the shipyard, but don’t go overboard with jargon that has very little meaning. For example, don’t just tell the interviewer that you are a team player. Describe what this means for you instead.

Don’t be pushy.

Finally, as you interview, keep your overall attitude in check. You want to demonstrate that you are good at what you do and showcase your accomplishments, but there is a fine line between confidence and arrogance. If you come across as pushy or even desperate, you may decrease your chances of being hired by this shipyard employer.
