Tips on Managing Contract and Full Time Employees

In the shipyard environment, you may have employees from a variety of different sources in your workplace. But mixing contract and full-time employees doesn’t have to be a nightmare, but it’s important to acknowledge the differences in their jobs while not treating them in a different way. Here are some tips to help you manage both contract and full-time shipyard employees.

Rely on your recruiter.

Your contract employees have their own system of support, to make sure you’re taking advantage of this. While you are in control of the management of your full-time staff, your recruiter can help take some of the pressure off of your position with your contractors. Of course, that doesn’t mean you can’t provide instruction or feedback to temporary employees, but do always inform the recruiter and allow them to help manage.

Make them feel welcome.

One of the most important things for contract and full-time employees alike is to feel welcomed on the job. This means you have to pay specific attention to the onboarding program to ensure that they’re excited about the opportunity and feel prepared to start. This goes beyond safety orientation and job training. They also need to feel comfortable with the overall company culture.

Include everyone.

Whenever you have a company event or meeting, be sure to include everyone whether they’re a permanent full-time employee or a contractor. Fostering community will be one of the most important aspects of employee management and will help everyone understand their position and ownership in the work they do.

Discuss future opportunities.

And, whether someone is full time or contract, be willing to discuss future opportunities. Contract positions can turn into full-time positions with your company, so be sure to communicate that with your team. Know who is interested in potential long-term work with your company and who would prefer to stay contract to help you decide how to make future hiring decisions.
