Insights on How Your Online Reputation May Hinder Job Applicants and How To Address It

You may be wondering how online brand management affects your shipyard. Isn’t that something for big name brands like Nike or Coca-Cola? Or maybe for people working within the digital space? The truth is, no company is immune from the potential effects of a negative online reputation. And this is especially true for incoming applicants. If they see negative information online, top talent is far less likely to apply or accept a position. So how do you mitigate it? Here are a few things you can do to get started.

Google your company.

Do exactly what a job seeker would do. Search for your company name, your own name, and the names of other top executives in your organization. You can see what people are saying about you online. You may also want to check out your company on an online review site like Glassdoor. Review other social media like Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter as well. If you don’t know about an online problem, you won’t have the ability to solve it.

Seed the web with positive information.

There isn’t always a way to remove negative information from the internet, but you can bury it with positive information. Don’t respond to an angry tweet but create new content that shows your company in a positive light on social media. Ask happy employees to write positive reviews, but don’t offer incentives for doing so, which could be seen as a conflict of interest.

Review the terms of service.

There may be instances where a negative comment online violates a page’s terms of service. If you believe this is the case, open a dialogue with the website in question. Be polite and don’t act as if you’re entitled to this information being removed. Instead, go through the proper channels and discuss why this might be a violation. You may get the information removed.

Focus on your business’s online presence.

If you don’t already, now is the time to make sure your shipyard is represented in the digital space. Create Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter profiles and keep them updated on a regular basis. If you can, hire or appoint someone to be your social media manager. You may even want to create a blog to help set your shipyard up as an industry leader.
