3 Things to Keep in Mind When Considering Changing Careers

There are a lot of reasons you may be considering a change in career. Maybe you’re not fulfilled by your current industry or you want more stability. Or maybe you have always wanted to work with ships and see how your labor can impact an entire fleet sailing the oceans. No matter the reason, it’s important that you prepare the right way to change your industry. How can you find your next job in a shipyard? Here are the first 3 steps you can take when changing careers.

Do your homework.

If you want to work in a shipyard, take a step back first. What do we mean by this? You need perspective on why you want to change careers. Is it dissatisfaction or an interest in learning a new skill? Whatever your reason, examine it thoroughly. You also want to see what’s keeping you in your current position. Are you afraid of the unknown? You’ll need to examine your reasons, your fears, and research the steps to move forward.

Learn and explore.

Step two is to start the process to become a part of the marine industry. What position are you aiming for in a shipyard? Do you know what kinds of experience a company is looking for when they’re hiring new talent? Are there skills you need to learn before you can accept a job? Are there classes you can take? Your job in this transition period is to get as much knowledge as possible to be able to move forward.

Create your plan.

Finally, you need to be very specific about your goals to find your shipyard job. Create a plan and make achievable milestones for the next month, six months, or a year. For example, use the next month to enroll in trades programs that can teach you the skills you need and find a mentor. At six months, you can create a game plan for the next steps. If you want to be in your new position within a year, establish goals that can reach that milestone.

Work with a leader in shipyard staffing.
