Help your Career by Building a Rapport with your Boss

Your manager is an important part of your career success. Whether you like them or not, they hold the keys to a lot of aspects of your job. But you can always improve your relationship with your boss even when you’re uncertain about their intentions or abilities. You need to take responsibility for building a positive relationship with your managers, supervisors or other upper level employees. Here are a few tips to get you started.

  • Take initiative. Your boss wants to see that you’re willing to get your hands dirty. Keeping safety and procedure in mind, you don’t have to wait for your boss to explicitly tell you to take on a task. Be willing to take on new things without hesitation. In the case of your shipyard job, you may want to start by showing interest in the safety protocol and ensuring that your workstation is always at peak efficiency.
  • Share your ideas. Your boss also wants to hear from you. When you have an idea that could help streamline a process or make a function safer, go ahead and talk to them about it. They want to work with self-starters interested in making a positive contribution to the shipyard, so don’t hesitate to talk to them about your ideas.
  • Communicate effectively. It’s also important that you learn to communication effectively on the job. Be sure to hone your skills in face-to-face communication, including your body language, as well as written communication such as email. When you communicate effectively and clearly, you also encourage those around you to do the same and can avoid unnecessary confrontation or passive aggressive behavior.
  • Deliver value. Ultimately, your job as a shipyard employee is to deliver value for your employer. You need to be sure to keep up with the work you’re assigned, perform with accuracy and efficiency, and produce the necessary results for your managers. If you do this, you will be seen as a valuable asset. Your boss will be mindful of your abilities and give you the opportunity to advance your career within the shipyard.
