Understanding the Different Types of Welding Gloves

Welding is an essential skill in a shipyard. And your professionals rely on you to be protected and safe in the workplace. Have you considered the types of welding gloves you provide your welders? There are a number of gloves to choose from, each with their own specifications. Before you make your next purchasing decision, here are some ways to better understand the different types of welding gloves.

What Type of Welding?

The type of glove you will need depends on the type of welding your employees do. This may even mean there will be more than one type of glove depending on the welder’s specialization. Arc, gas, and resistance are the most common types of welding used in today’s shipbuilding industry.

You want to provide your employees protection from heat and sparks and use the right gloves for the job.

What Glove Material?

You may be wondering why we’ve isolated this specific topic. The most obvious and common choice for welding gloves is leather. It’s durable, non-conductive and helps to dissipate the heat while working with high-temperature materials and tools.

But not all leather is the same, and you may have some choices including:

    • Goatskin
    • Cowhide
    • Pigskin

There are also some less common leathers, such as horse, deer and elk available on the market. You may want to take a look at what works best with the specific type of welding your employees are performing.

What Level of Dexterity?

Along with the high temperatures and skin protection from sparks, it’s also important that you take hand movement into account. Different types of welding require different levels of dexterity, so the gloves need to reflect the ability to move fingers to accomplish find details.

Each type of welding will require different fin motor skills, so don’t settle for just one kind of glove for all jobs. Welding safety isn’t necessarily a one-size-fits-all situation.
