Why Timing is Everything When it Comes to a Job Search

The right time to apply for a job

They say timing is everything. And, of course, this time of year, were always focused on time. We watch Father Time push the clock hands to midnight on December 31st, 2019, as we welcome Baby New Year and the start of the new Roaring 20s. But timing covers a lot more than just counting down to the New Year. When it comes to your job searchtiming really can make all the difference. What are the best times to apply for that next job? Here’s a closer look to help you increase your chances of getting the job you want.

Don’t Wait Too Long

Hiring is a fast-paced prospect for most shipyards. If you see a job you want, that’s not the time to revamp your resume. Start by being prepared so you can pounce on new job postings as soon as you see them. The longer you wait, the better the likelihood that someone else will be considered for the opportunity.

Try Tuesday

It sounds weirdly specific, but try applying for new open jobs on Tuesdays. Studies in recruiting behavior show that many companies will post open positions on Tuesday morning. If youre there by early afternoon to see the newest jobs, you are going to be one of the first people to respond. Focus on your job search right after lunch to take advantage of any new offerings.

Ensure You’re a Match

Before you apply, make sure you match enough of the qualifications. Many people have a strategy of applying to everything to see what happens, but that can backfire. That’s especially true in a very specialized environment like the shipbuilding industry, where employers are likely to talk with one another. Instead, make sure you check at least the most important boxes before you send in your application.

Know When to Follow Up

It’s also important to know when to follow up on an application. If you don’t follow up at all, you risk getting lost in the shuffle. If you follow up too much, you risk becoming an annoyance to the hiring manager. It’s okay to send a quick email after you’ve submitted an application to see if they’ve had a chance to review it, but don’t cross a line into pestering territory.
