Tips for Setting Career Goals for the New Year

Career planning for the year

We’re getting closer to ringing in 2020. None of us know what this next decade will bring, so we need to take it one step at a time. For your shipyard career, now is a great time to set new goals. Unlike a resolution, that will often be broken within the first week of the New Year, establishing goals and tracking your accomplishment will help create a new mindset to keep you on track. Here are some goals that can help you find success in your shipyard career for 2020.

Self-Reflection

Step one is to take your inventory. What do you want to do, and how can you put the pieces into place to be able to do it? Take some time to reflect on what you’re looking for in your next job. Without focus, your job search can be all over the place and won’t provide the results you want. Start by looking at the shipbuilding industry. Where do you see yourself in that career path?

Inventory of Values

What do you want out of a job? What kind of company do you want to work for? Are you ambitious and want to climb the ladder into higher positions over time? Do you want a company that focuses more on work/life balance? Do you simply want to do the work you love? Whatever your reason, make sur

e you’re tracking your values so you can find the right employer for you.

Write Down Your Goals

It has been proven that when we write down our goals, we are more likely to accomplish them. It helps you visualize the end result. It also helps to create a task list of things you need to accomplish to reach the goal. You also get the satisfaction of crossing things off your list as you complete them. Start now by grabbing a notebook and a pencil and start making a list.

Give Yourself a Timeframe

It’s also helpful to give yourself a frame of reference. It could be finding a job as soon as possible, but what does that mean. Can you give yourself a month or more? Or maybe you can challenge yourself to find a job by a specific time, and if you’re not able to, apply with a staffing agency to do some short-term work in the meantime.

Reward Success

When you are able to reach a milestone, consider rewarding yourself. It doesn’t have to be a big expensive reward; just something so acknowledges to yourself that you have accomplished a task that is an essential step on your job search journeyRewards offer positive reinforcement to help us continue forward to reaching our goals.
