Most Common Injuries Industrial Workers Face & Measures You Can Take To Prevent Them

tech in maritime industry

Injuries on the job are no small matter. But even with a robust safety program, accidents happen. What are the most common injuries that industrial and marine workers face, and how can you take measures to prevent them?

Here are some common injuries and what you can do to keep your team safe.

Contact with Object or Equipment

It’s common in industrial environments for injuries to occur when employees have contact with objects or equipment. For example, clothing could get stuck in a machine. Or someone could be trapped or crushed by falling structures. Enforce rules about safe dress code and regularly inspect structures or machines before use.

Overexertion

Industrial jobs are physically demanding, but that doesn’t mean your employees can push themselves past their physical limits. Overexertion can cause strains, sprains, back injuries, reduced performance capacity, and exhaustion. Be sure to encourage your team to take regular breaks and work together as a team for more demanding jobs.

Slips, Trips, and Falls

Especially when working in a marine environment where water may be a constant companion, employees are at risk of slips, trips, and falls. Falls from height can cause significant injuries. Ensure that you clean up hazards as soon as they occur and encourage safe use of ladders and scaffolding.

Repetitive Motion

Many jobs in industrial environments are repetitive. And repetitive jobs can cause repetitive motion injuries. Examples are conditions like carpal tunnel caused by the repetitive use of the hands. Encourage your employees to seek treatment at the first signs of these conditions, as they can escalate quickly and cause irreparable damage.

Exposure to Harmful Substances

There are other hazards on the job, including exposure to chemicals and other compounds that could be hazardous. Always train your team on the safe handling of this material and reinforce safety regularly. Always encourage safety equipment such as gloves, eye protection, and respirators.
