Manufacturing jobs, even within a shipyard environment, are often seen as fluid positions. You may transition from one shipyard to another several times throughout your career. But sometimes, you want to gain more stable footing and become a recognized and relied upon team member for your manager. How do you do that? Of course, you need the skills and aptitude to perform at the highest level required, but there may be something more. Consider how dependability can play a part in your career success.
- Make communication a priority. One of the biggest factors contributing to reliability in the workplace is good communication. Your management team wants to know what you’re doing, how you’re doing it, and what you expect the outcome to be. Employees who don’t communicate are often viewed as a problem since no one knows where their head is at on the job. Be proactive about talking with management and co-workers.
- Finish your projects on time. To be considered dependable, the baseline performance is to finish all your projects on time. Budget your time to ensure that this will happen with every aspect of the project. If you can’t, for any reason, communicate immediately and let them know what the concern is and have a solution in place to get the project done as soon as you can.
- Respect other people’s time. Your time is important, but so is everyone else’s. There may be times when someone’s job is reliant on the completion of your part of the project. Know that you need to be an essential step in this process, so be sure to keep their time in mind as you finish what you’re working on to hand it over.
- Tell the truth. It’s human nature to occasionally obscure the truth to avoid confrontation. But these little white lies can get out of hand quickly. The most dependable employees are those willing to talk to their supervisors and coworkers with absolute candor and honesty. If there is a problem, let them know. And work with them to determine a solution.
- Excel at your work. Finally, make sure the work you’re doing is exceptional. Even if you communicate and meet your deadlines, if your parts of the project are incorrect or poor quality, you’re not a dependable employee at all. Your work needs to be spot on so something can go right from your workstation to the next without any correction or intermediate steps.
