Does an Apprenticeship Fit Into My Career Path?

What do you want to do in your shipyard career? If you’re just starting out, you may be getting a feel for the various roles and things you can do within a shipyard environment. But can an apprenticeship help take your career to the next level? How does it fit in with your career path? Here are a few things you should know about apprenticeships and the marine industry.

Pick a Specialization

There are a number of roles within a shipyard that will require additional training. These include:

    • Welders
    • Fabricators
    • Plumbers
    • Pipefitters
    • Electricians
    • Carpenters

One of the best ways to get the experience you need in any of these specializations is to apply for and work in an apprenticeship. There are multiple avenues to help you find these opportunities to expand your skills and advance your career. An apprenticeship can not only fit into your career path, it can be your ticket to future success.

Work Within a Trade School

You can often find these apprenticeships through programs at your local trade school. When you take courses to become certified in any of these specializations, they are frequently working with professionals in your area to help you gain the practical skills you need before you can go out on your own.

Find a Mentor

There may be ways to do this on your own as well. Talk to industry leaders to see if anyone is willing to take on an apprentice to help you hone your skills. Finding a mentor, even if you’re working on another apprenticeship program, can give you more insights to the job and help you determine what you really want to do in your career.

Temporary Work

It may also be beneficial for you to take temporary jobs within a shipyard environment to get the practical on-the-job skills you’ll need to pursue your future career. Working with a staffing agency that specializes in these placements can give you an advantage when you’re ready to find a permanent job as well.
