Career Advancement Tips in the Shipyard Industry

Career Advancement

Most of us desire career advancement and satisfaction throughout our working years. Even if you start in an entry-level position at a shipyard, you have an opportunity to work your way up and advance your career. It’s important to assess your goals, know what you want, and make a plan to attain the next steps. If you’re currently working as a packer or custodian or seeking your next entry level shipyard job, here are a few tips for working your way up to becoming a shipyard superintendent.

Be Patient

Not all advancement happens overnight. When you start with an entry-level position, be patient about the time you spend in that role. It may be a year, it may be less, or it may be longer. But you will learn the ropes, and you will demonstrate that you are competent and capable. That will be rewarded in the future.

Take Initiative

To show that you are excited about the job an interested in more responsibilities, take the initiative. If someone asks for a volunteer, offer your services. Do this even if the task is undesirable. Especially if the task is undesirable. This will show that you’re a team player and willing to make the right sacrifices for the success of the project.

Show Leadership Skills

Even if you never intend to work in a management or supervisory capacity, leadership skills will take you far. This means that you’re willing to delegate tasks when necessary, you can lead people in difficult situations, and that you’re willing to take on additional responsibility when necessary. Leadership means so much more than management in terms of your career trajectory.

Demonstrate Your Potential

Make sure you are demonstrating your potential to your supervisor and management at every step of the way. They always say, “show, don’t tell.” It’s good advice for any occasion, including how you can show your potential for your employer. Do good work, continue to learn new things, and take responsibility for everything you do.
