Top Tips on Overcoming Generation Gaps at Work

The marine industry is very different than many other career paths. Working within a shipyard is a form of fabrication and manufacturing that is specialized and specific. You’ll find when you start a position in this kind of environment you’ll be working with a variety of people from a variety of backgrounds, including a generational divide. But whether you’re a Baby Boomer, GenXer, or Millennial, it’s important that you learn to work with others who think differently. So how do you overcome a generation gap at work?

Look at your own biases.

Regardless of which generation you fall into, it’s important to check your own biases before interacting with someone else. Are you a baby boomer that believes all millennials have an entitlement mentality? Before you work with a millennial, try to shed that belief so you can get to know them as an individual rather than a stereotype.

Consider their perspective.

There is also a lot to be said about empathy. When you are interacting with someone from another generation, try to see things from their point of view. We all have different circumstances, including but not limited to our generation, but try to see what the world is like from their perspective.

Have the right attitude.

When you’re working with someone from another generation, there isn’t enough to be said about having a positive attitude. If you go into every working relationship with someone from another age bracket viewing it as a chore, you’ll project that negativity in the work you do, which will reflect on how they interact with you as well.

Consider technology.

Finally, understanding technology is considered a purely millennial pursuit and many boomers will leave that to them. But don’t. Technology isn’t a passing fad and it will enhance the working experience for everyone across the board. While many people talk about boomers and GenXers acting as mentors for millennials, you can learn from them as well and use technology as the means to bridge the gap.
