Have you dusted off your resume lately? Now may be a great time to dig in and give it a spring cleaning to help kick start your job search. It’s not uncommon for people to shelve their resumes while they’re actively working, but that means the process to update it may be more difficult when you actually need to. Instead, use the spring each year to give it a quick overhaul to include all the most recent accomplishments and information. Here are some things you can do today.
- Replace the objective statement. Objectives used to be standard on resumes. They were a short statement about what you wanted in a job. But today, objectives can be left off all together be replaced with a summary or accomplishment section. If you want to revamp it, make it useful for someone to see quickly what you bring to the table for your next shipyard job.
- Eliminate laundry lists. Resumes, especially those for warehouse or manufacturing jobs, were once just a list of skills. But that’s no longer effective in today’s job market. Employers want to see your accomplishments. They don’t know what to know that you can do something, they want to see how your skills positively impacted your past employers.
- Make custom templates. While you’re applying to shipyard jobs, you may also be looking for other manufacturing environments. We understand that sometimes you have to cast a wide net. But make sure you’re not sending a generic resume out for these positions. Shipyard employers want to see industry specific information on a resume. Instead of having a generic resume, put together a few options and take a little time to customize them before sending them out.
- Remove irrelevant information. It’s not uncommon for recruiters or hiring managers to see information about hobbies on resumes. Unless these things can specifically tie into your interest in a shipyard position, it’s best to leave them off. Also leave off any information that refers to race, religion, marital status, children, or age.
