Pipefitters 101: Skills to Get the Job

A pipefitter does just that. They lay out pipes according to blueprints, assemble them, install them, and maintain the entire system including supports. This can be for anything hydraulic or pneumatic related to steam or hot water, heating and cooling or even sprinkling. But becoming a pipefitter doesn’t happen overnight. What are the essential skills you need to find a pipefitting job?

Welding

Shipyards use many types of welding, so it’s important you understand the specific needs for the environment. There will be large scale welding in very tight spaces throughout your career as a pipefitter, which means you should be comfortable with small spaces, familiar with welding equipment and safety conscious.

Blueprint Reading

Blueprints are like a treasure map to help you better understand where things need to be routed and how to get them in the proper position. You can learn blueprint reading through a variety of resources, including trade school and other educational experiences. You may also want to work as an apprentice to get a feel for this type of work.

Math Literacy

Understanding the fundamentals of math will help you with measurements and calculations throughout the process.

Algebra, geometry and calculus are all critical for you to understand the processes of pipefitting. There are specific formulas that professionals use, but having a solid background in mathematics will help you catch on faster.

Tool Knowledge

Along with the safety and welding equipment necessary for success as a pipefitter, there are other tools of the trade. It’s helpful to understand them and their uses when you’re in the process of becoming a professional pipefitter. Some of these tools include:

  • Pipefitter’s square
  • Quality control welder’s gauge
  • Fitter grips
  • Pipe wraps
  • Flange aligner
  • Pipe layout tools
  • Multi-hole imager

These are just some of the tools you’ll need to be familiar with to work as a pipefitter in the shipbuilding industry.
