Machinists are an integral part of your shipyard. In your interview, you want to separate beginners from experts, so what questions should you be asking to get to the bottom of things?
Here are some things you should know and a few sample interview questions to help you check that your qualifications are being met.
Tramming
Tramming is a concept that comes from the machines used before CNC. These knee mills had an adjustable head, and machinists had to “tram” the separate piece before working to ensure that everything was accurate. People still refer to tramming in terms of CNC machines, but that’s not precisely accurate. CNC machines do not have an adjustable head, and they need to be leveled, not trammed, before use. An experienced machinist will know the difference.
Sample question: “What is the first thing you need to do when you begin to use a CNC machine.”
Feeds and Speeds
New machinists will often take the cutting of materials very slowly. However, a more experienced machinist will know that a more aggressive approach is sometimes more efficient. New machinists will take longer to cut, thinking they’re careful with the machine, but it can cause the tools to wear down faster and negatively affect the surface material.
Sample question: “How do you prevent tool rubbing when cutting metal?”
Fixturing
CNC machines are incredible tools that can help you make just about anything. With the right fixturing, or workholding, you can do anything. But sometimes, people can overcomplicate the process and, in the end, be inefficient. There are two sides to every part, so you will never have a completed piece if you focus too much on one side.
Sample question: “How do you streamline your process with a pallet system and fixture plates?”
Experience
Machining is a hands-on skill. While you can take classes and read books, it isn’t until you begin working with machines that you grow your skills. Everyone has to start somewhere, but the more experience a machinist brings to the table, the better your fabrication process will be in the long run.
Sample question: “Tell me about a time when you realized your skills and moved to the next level.”
