How Do I Begin My Career Search?

Where to start your job search

Sometimes it’s a good idea to get back to basics. If you don’t know where to begin with your job search, it’s best to start at the beginning. That means considering all the things that are basic but that you may not have thought of or forgot over the years. So what are the essential tips that you should be remembering?

Make Yourself the Right Fit

Companies put a lot of emphasis on overall fit for the job. That means you have to have the skills, of course, but you also need to be the right person for the job. Your values and goals should be consistent with those of the company.

Don’t Limit Your Applications to Online

The internet made it so much easier to search for jobs. Sometimes it’s just one button to click. But you shouldn’t limit your job search to these resources. Get out in the community, drop off resumes, and do some networking.

Change Your Resume

Have you looked at your resume recently? It might need to be updated or changed. Look into other formats for resumes, such as a functional resume, to see if it might be better for your specific experience.

Be Interesting

While you need to be qualified and the right fit for the job, you should also be someone who is interesting that the company will want to hire. When you’re talking about your experience, be sure to frame it as a story that will engage them in your background.

Say Thank You

Throughout the entire process, be sure to say thank you. After an interview, send a thank-you note to the hiring manager to reiterate your interest and thank them for their time. Gratitude goes a long way, even in your job search.

Follow Up

You may think your work is done as soon as the interview is over, but that’s not the case. There are reasons you should take the time to follow up. During the interview, ask when they expect to make a decision. When that time has passed, send a quick email or give them a call to check in. Just don’t let this cross over into pestering behavior.
