A resume is your first impression when looking for a job. They’re not meant to land you a job but to get you a shot at an interview where you can impress the company with your skills and background. So how do you create a fantastic resume and cover letter for your next maritime job?
Here are a few simple tips.
Make the Format Easy to Read
Recruiters will often take only about six seconds to scan a resume to see if it has the necessary information. Make the format easily scannable. Don’t include large blocks of text. Instead, break your details up using bullet points. Don’t use fancy fonts or colors.
Keep it Brief
A resume isn’t intended to be a complete list of everything you’ve ever done. Make it short and relevant for the job at hand. If you can, keep it down to one page or two at the most. A good rule of thumb is to leave off anything older than ten years.
Focus on Accomplishments
Rather than just listing your skills and background, including your accomplishments. Focus on how you were a benefit to your employer and use as much data as possible. For example, instead of simply stating that you are a pipefitter, show how your work increased efficiency or savings.
The Anatomy of a Great Cover Letter
You should always include a cover letter with your resume. In most cases, you’ll submit your resume via email or an online application portal. The cover letter will give them context for your resume. Include a personalized greeting, why you’re interested in the job, a little bit about yourself and your experience, and reiterate your commitment.
Following Up
Sending a resume doesn’t have to be the end of the process. You can and should follow up. Set a reminder for about a week after you submit your resume. Email the HR department or hiring manager directly and let them know that you submitted a resume and ask about the interview timeframe or the next steps.
